VR and AI in 2026: How AI Is Changing Virtual Reality Training

AI now touches every stage of VR training, from generating 3D assets and writing Unity code to powering characters trainees can talk to. Here is what has changed since 2023, what works in production and what is still hype.

vr-ai-future-merged

When this article first ran in 2023, the question was whether AI and virtual reality would ever meet in a meaningful way. That question is settled. In 2026, AI shows up at every stage of a VR project: it helps build the 3D world, write the code that runs it, voice the characters inside it and read the data that comes out of it.

What hasn’t changed is why VR training works. People learn by doing, and VR lets them do the job before they do it for real. AI doesn’t replace that. It makes VR training faster to build, cheaper to update and more responsive to the person in the headset. Here is where VR and AI actually intersect today, based on what is shipping rather than what is promised.

Where AI fits in a VR training project

It helps to split AI in VR into three jobs. Most of the progress since 2023 has happened in the first one, which is also the one buyers rarely see.

01 · Build

AI builds the content

Text-to-3D models, reality capture of real sites, AI-assisted Unity code and no-code authoring tools.

02 · Experience

AI shapes the session

Characters trainees can talk to, voice-driven steps, real-time coaching and instant translation.

03 · Measure

AI reads the results

Patterns across thousands of sessions, skill-gap flags and reports a trainer can act on.

What has changed since 2023

  • AI moved into the tools developers already use. Unity launched Unity AI with Unity 6.2 in August 2025, retiring its earlier Muse experiments in favor of an in-editor Assistant, asset Generators and an inference engine (CG Channel).
  • Text-to-3D became usable. A prompt or a photo can now become a textured 3D model in minutes.
  • Characters can hold a conversation. Real-time speech models let trainees talk naturally to a virtual coworker or customer and hear a spoken reply.
  • Hardware got smarter and smaller. Samsung’s Galaxy XR launched with Google’s Gemini built in, and AI glasses now put an assistant and a small display in front of frontline workers.
  • Meta stepped back from business VR. Meta stopped selling Quest for Business headsets and shut down Horizon Workrooms in February 2026. Companies now buy standard Quest headsets and manage them with third-party device management tools (UploadVR).

How AI is changing the way VR training is built

Custom VR training has always been expensive for three reasons: 3D content, code and subject-matter expertise. AI is now reducing the cost of all three, though not evenly.

AI-generated 3D models

Text-to-3D and image-to-3D tools can produce a textured model of a valve, a toolbox or a control cabinet in minutes. Meshy, Hyper3D Rodin and Tripo lead the commercial tools. Microsoft released TRELLIS.2 as an open-source image-to-3D model with PBR materials in December 2025, Meta’s AssetGen 2.0 generates meshes and textures from text or images, and Unity added its own 3D Object Generator in May 2026.

The limit is accuracy. These tools are excellent for props, placeholders and background objects, and not yet for the equipment a procedure is built around. Unity describes its own generator’s output as placeholders for prototyping. Generated meshes usually need topology cleanup and correct scale, and anything a trainee must operate needs the right parts, labels and moving components. A breaker panel that looks right but has the wrong layout teaches the wrong procedure.

Rule of thumb: let AI fill the room, and let engineers and 3D artists build the equipment the procedure depends on, from CAD files, drawings and site photos.

Reality capture and Gaussian splatting for digital twins

Often the fastest way to a realistic site is to scan it. Gaussian splatting turns phone or 360° camera footage into a photoreal 3D scene. Niantic Spatial’s Scaniverse for business now targets construction, energy and logistics teams, and Meta’s Hyperscape Capture scans a room in minutes on a Quest 3. The Khronos Group has also published a glTF standard for Gaussian splats, backed by Autodesk, NVIDIA, Esri and others, which should make these scenes easier to move between tools.

For training, splats are ideal for site familiarization: walking a plant floor, a substation or an underground vault before the first visit. They are static and can’t be relit or physically interacted with, so interactive equipment still has to be modeled. Expect most projects to blend the two, with a scanned environment around modeled, interactive digital twins of the equipment.

AI-assisted Unity development

Most enterprise VR training is built in Unity, and Unity development is where AI has moved fastest. Unity AI puts an assistant inside the editor with Ask, Agent and Plan modes. Unity’s official MCP server, released in May 2026, lets outside coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot read a project’s scene hierarchy, components and console directly. GitHub’s Copilot coding agent and OpenAI’s Codex both became generally available in fall 2025.

The productivity gains are real but uneven. Google’s 2025 DORA report found 90% of developers use AI and more than 80% say it makes them more productive, while only 24% trust its output a great deal. A 2025 METR trial found experienced developers were slower with early-2025 tools, a result METR later said no longer reflects current tools. In practice, AI speeds up boilerplate, interaction scripts, UI and testing. Architecture, performance on standalone headsets and the correctness of procedure logic still need experienced developers reviewing every change.

For buyers, the benefit shows up as faster iteration and cheaper updates to existing modules, which matters when procedures change every year.

No-code and AI-assisted authoring platforms

At the other end of the market, no-code XR platforms let subject-matter experts build simpler training themselves. SynergyXR’s Procedure Builder lets experts assemble 3D procedures without code, and SynergyXR 3.0 added AI voice guidance and AI-assisted multi-language support. Uptale offers AI generation of experiences from documents and prompts, AI role-play and an AI coach, several of them in beta. Talespin’s CoPilot Designer builds conversational scenarios from text prompts.

These platforms fit step-by-step procedures on standard content. Custom VR development still makes sense when the equipment is unique to your operation, when interactions have to behave exactly like the real thing, or when a scenario branches in ways a template can’t express. Many organizations will use both.

How AI is changing what happens inside the headset

Conversational AI characters

The biggest change for trainees is that virtual people can now talk back. Instead of picking one of three scripted replies, a trainee can speak naturally to a customer, a coworker or a supervisor, and the character answers in real time.

Convai offers conversational avatars with Unity and Unreal SDKs, 65+ languages and private deployment. Inworld’s realtime API combines speech-to-text, language models and text-to-speech in one pipeline. OpenAI made its gpt-realtime speech-to-speech model generally available in August 2025, and NVIDIA open-sourced Audio2Face for real-time lip-sync in October 2025.

This matters most for communication-heavy work: customer conversations, crew briefings, shift handoffs, de-escalation and safety stand-downs. Platforms like Virti and Uptale already score these conversations against a rubric rather than matching keywords.

Voice-driven procedures and real-time coaching

Voice is also replacing menus. A trainee can ask “what’s the next step?” or “why does this matter?” and get an answer grounded in the approved procedure. An AI coach can notice hesitation, a repeated error or a skipped check, step in with a hint, then pull back as the trainee improves.

Guardrails matter in safety-critical training. A sensible pattern is to have AI characters answer only from your approved procedures and flag what they don't know, while pass or fail decisions on critical steps stay in fixed, validated logic.

Instant translation and localization

AI translation and voice generation make it practical to ship the same module in many languages. For companies training crews across provinces, states and countries, that removes one of the slowest steps in a rollout.

How AI is changing VR training analytics

A VR module records far more than a quiz: every step, every hesitation, every mistake. AI turns that data into something a trainer can act on, such as the step most trainees miss, who needs coaching before heading to the field, and how results compare across sites. VR Vision’s Vision Portal already tracks performance across teams, and we cover the AI side in depth in How AI Is Powering the Next Generation of VR Training Analytics.

The hardware: AI glasses, Android XR and a changing Meta

  • Android XR and Gemini. Samsung Galaxy XR launched in October 2025 with Gemini built in, and added enterprise management through Android Enterprise and Knox in April 2026. It isn’t sold in Canada yet.
  • Apple Vision Pro. Apple refreshed Vision Pro with the M5 chip in October 2025 and cites CAE flight training among its enterprise users.
  • AI glasses for frontline work. IDC reports XR shipments grew 44.4% in 2025, driven by smart glasses, and expects display glasses to outship VR and mixed reality headsets by 2027. Meta Ray-Ban Display is now sold in Canada, and Meta’s developer toolkit supports step-by-step guides on the display. At Connect 2026, Meta also announced lightweight VR glasses for spring 2027.
  • Meta’s business exit. With Quest for Business discontinued, Meta’s managed services are now free, with support through January 2030. Quest headsets remain widely used for training and can be managed through third-party device management tools.

The practical takeaway: VR headsets remain the right tool for learning a procedure before doing it, and AI glasses are emerging as the tool for support during the job. Expect the two to work together: practice in VR, then get guided on the job.

What this means if you’re buying VR training in 2026

  1. Expect faster timelines and cheaper updates. AI trims time from asset creation, scripting and localization. Ask vendors where they use it and where the savings show up in your quote. Our guide to VR development costs breaks down where the money goes.
  2. Pay for accuracy, not polygons. The value of custom VR training is that it matches your equipment and your procedure. Make sure AI-generated content is reviewed by people who know the job.
  3. Ask where your data goes. Conversational AI and analytics process voice and performance data. Check hosting, retention and whether models can run privately.
  4. Plan for a mixed fleet. Headsets for practice and AI glasses for on-the-job support are converging. Choose content and platforms that aren’t tied to a single device.

VR and AI FAQ

How is AI used in virtual reality?

AI is used to build VR content (generating 3D models, scanning real sites and writing code), to power the experience (conversational characters, voice commands, real-time coaching and translation) and to analyze results (spotting skill gaps across training sessions).

Can AI build a VR training simulation on its own?

Not yet. AI can generate props, draft code and assemble simple procedures in no-code tools, but accurate equipment models, procedure logic and safety-critical checks still need developers and subject-matter experts to build and validate them.

Will AI make VR training cheaper?

It already reduces the time spent on 3D assets, scripting and localization, which lowers the cost of building and updating modules. How much you save depends on how much of the project is custom equipment and procedure logic, which still takes skilled work.

What is the difference between AI glasses and VR headsets for training?

VR headsets fully immerse the learner, which makes them best for practicing procedures and rare or dangerous scenarios. AI glasses keep the wearer in the real world and add an assistant and a small display, which suits step-by-step support during the actual job.

Is conversational AI safe to use in safety-critical training?

Yes, with guardrails. AI characters should answer from approved procedures, avoid improvising on safety steps and leave pass or fail decisions on critical steps to fixed, validated logic.
